Kill the Chill with Books and Wine
I met this group of book clubbers on Instagram – or as our tribe calls it, Bookstagram! Check out their account @mfbookclub to see the books they’ve been reading and some great photos of the glowing and smiling members. (Some of the photos are in a series behind the book pic, so be sure to slide.)
They also add reviews for each posted book and have gotten positive feedback from the authors!
Thanks for the note and postcard, Ladies – and for the compliment on my Instagram feed! The postcard brings back memories of my one year of living in snowy Michigan. 🙂

About the MF Book Club
How did you choose the name of your book club?
We all brainstormed and somebody yelled out that we\’re just a mother friggin\’ book club! And it stuck. haha! We don’t say the f word in mixed company… not often!
Number of members:
Presently, we only have six. We had seven, but one of our members moved to Florida. We were so sad! We miss her!
When our book club was first formed, three of us decided to start it – Kathy, Karen H, and Beth. We came up with the idea that each of us would invite two of our friends to the book club. That way, we would have a unique blend of ladies coming from each of our separate friend circles. Since that beginning, we have had a couple members come and go. But our core group of seven (now six) has remained together for the past eleven years.
I might add that the original three have given ourselves titles. Beth is the President, Kathy is the Vice-President, and Karen is the Secretary. ha! Just a silly little fact that we like to bring up now and then. Karen is really the only one who has a truly important job and she does a fantastic job as secretary!
First names of the members:
Beth, Karen H, Kathy, Karen, Robbie, Maureen
Age range:
56 – 71
Gender makeup:
All women, no men allowed. That’s one of our 3 rules!
The other rules – #2 Understand the effects of alcohol and #3 so that anything you say at our mother friggin\’ book club is fine and will stay with us.
Date of first meeting:
February 1, 2007
Meeting schedule:
We have recently, FINALLY, set a meeting schedule of the 1st Thursday of every month. Sometimes we have to adjust that, but it has worked so much better since we have scheduled an expected night of each month.
Meeting place:
We alternate between homes every month. On occasion, we will plan a night out for dinner and drinks, but we all much prefer the quiet of someone\’s home.
Types of food and beverages:
Mostly wine, wine and wine, but we have also had beer, sangria, Moscow mules, chocolate martinis, etc! Our dinner menu usually has a theme associated with the book we read. For instance, we recently read This is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. In the book, the mother and son travel to Thailand. Beth hosted and served Thai food for the main meal. The book also centered on a story of a princess. I (Karen H.) ordered a cake from a local bakery that was decorated with princess items.
Book selection method:
We have a simple process of discussing at our book club what our next book should be. Pretty much 100% of the time, someone will already have a selection in mind. Sometimes, more than one person will have a recommendation and we will then read one the next time and save the other one for the time after that.
Most popular book:
A few of our very favorites were The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton, Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, and Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal.
Best book discussion:
Ironically, our least favorite book, The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan, was our most exciting and fun evening, while the hyped Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James was a ho-hum discussion!
Currently reading:
The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian
Next book scheduled:
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
