Kimothy Joy – That’s What She Said
Kimothy Joy’s painted portraits nearly leap off the pages of That’s What She Said: Wise Words from Influential Women. I’m happy to have this book in my home, able to pick it up at leisure for a boost of feminine pride.
Fifty women are expressively featured, each personified with her own words, an inspirational and profound quote. Kimothy also includes profiles of the diverse group, ranging from Sojourner Truth, who was born c. 1797 to Malala Yousafzai of Gen Z, born in 1997. Many of the others are as well known as these two; however, the lesser-known women haven’t had the recognition they deserve for contributions in the United States and beyond that permeate the continuous effort of making women’s voices heard and putting their power into effect.
Kimothy Joy’s focus on celebrating and empowering women and girls has garnered the attention of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Oprah Magazine, The Huffington Post, Parents magazine, and others who have featured her artwork. In addition to these media giants, Kimothy’s art is available to everyone else, too. Her online shop has prints of the women featured in That’s What She Said, plus stationery, accessories, and more – all adorned with images and eclectic script. And every year, 10% of all profit from Kimothy Joy’s online shop goes to a “social impact partner of the year.”
If you’re wondering how this project began for Kimothy, read her mini-bio, and especially her essay, Why I Do This Work.
Thank you for this postcard, Kimothy! I can’t decide which part I like best! Though you say the postcard is inconspicuous, it is composed of images of nature. I love nature. I also like learning about new places, like Cafe Cluny in NYC. And then there’s the doodle that represents your new soulmate. How exciting! And finally, the quote you chose by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. Readers will appreciate ending on it: What You Seek is Seeking You.
