Reading & Racing in Louisville, Kentucky
(the last line on the postcard says: on everyone’s bucket list.)
——————————
My love for horses began when taking horseback riding lessons (well into my adult years 🙂 ). One of the horses on the farm was a descendant of Secretariat, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1973.
I especially love this vintage postcard because it reminds me of horses, and the inviting note tells me that Louisville, KY is the place to visit!
Thank you Amy and Chicklits!

About The Chicklits Book Club
Number and names of current members: +/- 27 members, but only about 15 are active. Others can’t always attend; however, they keep up with what we are reading and try to follow along. At most meetings, we have about 10 members.
We are: Angie, Anne, Beth, Brenda, Carrie, Debra, Emily, Jennifer, Laura, Lisa, Lisa, Loren, Michelle, Mindy, Niamh, Regina, Stephanie, Tammy, Tamy, Amy, Susanne (Amy’s Bookstagram: Amy\’s Reading Groupies)
All women? Yes
Age range: 40 – 55 years old. Most of us are mothers of preteens, teenagers, or young adults, but a couple of us have little ones.
Date of first meeting: About 12 years ago – 2007ish? We have 5 original members.
Meeting Schedule: the 3rd Thursday of the month
Meeting Place: We take turns hosting at each other’s homes.
Food & Beverages: Lots of wine, heavy appetizers, and something sweet. Sometimes, a member will go all out and make a meal! But that’s not the norm.
Book Selection Method: The member who is hosting chooses the book for her month. We have guidelines though: 1) It has to be available in paperback so that it is affordable for everyone. 2) It can’t be over 500 pages because most of us don’t have time to read a long book within a month. 3) It can’t be by an author who we have already read in book club in the past two years. There are so many authors to discover and we want to spread the love!
Also, we choose our books 4 months in advance. We have some fast readers! And it gives us time to get the book from the library if there is a waitlist.
Most popular book: Within the last year – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie Barrows. When the movie adaptation came out on Netflix, we got together at my home (Amy), had a British inspired dinner, and watched together.
Best Book Discussion: Within the last year – The Forgetting Time by Sharon Guskin. This book talks about grief, loss, and even some reincarnation. It made for some great debates!
Currently Reading: We just finished Dispatches from Pluto by Richard Grant, which is a travel memoir of a British journalist who decides on a whim to buy an old farmhouse in the Mississippi Delta. Great discussions about this one, too, because of the issues of race.
Book Selection for January 2019: Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh, which is a historical novel set in Kenya in the 1950s. The main character is a young British woman who grew up in Kenya, but spent time away in England. She returns to find the political climate much different. And I think there is a love story thrown in as well.
