Cadwell Turnbull

Since its publication in June 2019, The Lesson continues to thrill readers with a thought-provoking story of alien colonization in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Five years after the Ynaa arrive on a spaceship, their presence is firmly established.

The growing list of kudos for The Lesson, a science fiction novel, has catapulted Cadwell Turnbull into the lanes of notable media: the Neukom Institute, Apple Books via Publishers Weekly, Wired magazine, B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog, and others. The Lesson was also chosen for Oprah Magazine\’s round-up of \”16 Books to Read to Celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month.”

Cadwell Turnbull’s gift and commitment to writing were enhanced by earning an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Linguistics at North Carolina State University. He also attended Clarion West in 2016. With much praise for The Lesson, Cadwell’s name has been mentioned in the same sentences as Octavia E. Butler and Ursula K. Le Guin.

On July 17, 2020, Cadwell announced some “big news” on his Facebook account. 

This fall I\’ll be starting a tenure-track Creative Writing position at North Carolina State University. I am very excited and also very nervous and still haven\’t wrapped my head around how it happened.

I am truly looking forward to working with the MFA students and the undergraduates that will be taking my classes and I hope to teach as much as I\’m likely to learn from them.

Being a professor has been a secret dream of mine for a long time and it somehow came together during the strangest year of my life (even before all the madness of recent months). I feel really grateful and I hope to step into this position with my wits intact and do my best to earn my spot in the English faculty.

Cadwell Turnbull is also excited about his short story in the soon-to-be-released (Sept. 16, 2020) anthology titled, Entanglements: Tomorrow’s Lovers, Families, and Friends; the theme – humans connected with evolving technology. Hugo Award-winner Sheila Williams edited twelve stories by award-winning science fiction authors worldwide.

Another great postcard, Cadwell! Thank you. The one I posted last year is a definite fav of mine. (Readers: Click over to see it.) And this one, too, is outside the box. I’ll admit that I was not familiar with Neal Cassady, and knew very little about the literary Beat Generation. So there you go – now I do know a little!

The history of The Marlton Hotel is also fascinating. A bit of googling told me that it was built in 1900 and was later home (then known as Marlton House) to famous and influential artists and writers such as Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac. Located in Greenwich Village, it was purchased in 2012-ish to be converted to the hotel it is today.
